Why it exists

Ground coffee goes stale fast once the bag is open, and a weekend kit has little room for bulky canisters. Most people end up with a folded bag held shut with a clip, or a zip bag that smells like last trip. This small tinplate tin keeps a weekend's worth of beans or grounds in one compact jar, with an inner lid and an outer lid that work together for a tighter seal than a single cap, at camp or on the kitchen counter.

How it works

Grind or measure out a couple of days of coffee, about 30 to 50 g (1.1 to 1.8 oz) depending on how strong you brew, and spoon it in. Set the inner lid in place, then the outer lid over it. The two lids work together: the inner lid closes the jar, and the outer lid covers it so there is a second barrier between your coffee and the air. In the morning, lift both lids, dose into your dripper, press, or percolator, and close it back up. Wipe it clean when you get home and keep it dry.

It is method-agnostic. Whatever you brew, pour-over, French press, cowboy coffee, or a drip bag's worth of grounds, the tin's job is to get the coffee to camp fresh and keep it that way between brews. It does the same job for loose-leaf tea or other dry food.

Built for the trail

  • Tinplate body sized for a pack or a small brew kit, about 85 mm wide × 87 mm tall (3.3 × 3.4 in).
  • Inner lid plus outer lid for a tighter seal than a single cap.
  • Holds about 30 to 50 g (1.1 to 1.8 oz), enough coffee for a weekend.
  • Portable metal jar that also works for tea or other dry food.
  • Listed with no high-concerned chemicals.
  • Three Color options, Blue, White, and Black, so you can tell coffee from tea in the bin.
  • Vintage styling that works as a small gift tin for coffee drinkers.

Best for

Weekend backpackers and overnight campers who pre-grind a couple of days of coffee and want it in a small, sealed tin rather than a zip bag. Van and cabin brewers who want a tidy counter tin for the bag they are working through. Tea drinkers who carry loose leaf. It also makes a small gift for a coffee drinker who camps. If you are storing a full bag of beans at home or feeding a group for a week, this is too small; look at a larger canister.

Honest limits

Capacity is about 30 to 50 g (1.1 to 1.8 oz): a weekend's coffee, not a bag's. It is a dry-goods tin: it is not described for liquids and not for use on a heat source. Tinplate wants to stay dry, so wipe it clean rather than soaking it, and do not pack it wet. The two-lid design is a tighter seal than a single cap, not a vacuum or a valve, so it slows staling rather than stopping it.

I bought these to store my fresh ground coffee. They're a perfect size and look very pretty..I like that you can mix and match the lids, which I have done. I don't use the inner lid, because it's a little tight to get off, and there's really no need for it since it's air tight without it. I'm so glad that I bought these, and at a great price.

I bought these to store my fresh ground coffee. They're a perfect size and look very pretty. This one was my favorite, but unfortunately it came with a small dent in the lid, so I took off one star for that. The other thing that I like about these is that you can mix and match the lids, so since this one was my favorite I put the red lid on it from a different one that I bought. I also don't use the inner lid, because it's a little tight to get off, and there's really no need for it since it's air tight without it.

Seller did a great job packaging the metal jar. Bubblewrap in a cardboard box. No dents, very happy. It also came with a plastic bag for tea.
