Why it exists

A mug that only holds coffee leaves you fishing for a second vessel when breakfast is soup, oats, or last night's stew. The sierra cup solves that the way it always has: a wide, shallow stainless bowl with a fixed handle that you drink from, eat from, rinse, and clip back on the pack. Ridgebrew's version keeps the classic shape in two sizes, 300 ml (10 fl oz) and 500 ml (17 fl oz), with a 304 stainless bowl and a 201 stainless handle, and no folding parts to loosen or lose.

How it works

Morning starts with coffee: pour from the percolator, moka pot, or dripper straight into the cup, hold it by the fixed handle, and drink. The wide mouth lets the coffee drop to drinking temperature quickly, which is exactly what you want at a cold trailhead when you are about to pack up. Rinse it, and it becomes the breakfast bowl: oats, instant soup, or leftover stew eat well from the shallow shape with a spoon. The 304 stainless bowl is food-contact rated and can hold boiling water, so you can pour straight from a rolling kettle without worrying about the material.

Pick 300 ml (10 fl oz) if the cup is mainly for coffee and tea with the occasional snack; at about 90 g (3.2 oz) it is the lighter carry for backpacking. Pick 500 ml (17 fl oz) if it will be your bowl as often as your mug; at about 115 g (4.1 oz) it holds a full camp meal. When you are done, rinse it and hang it from the handle on the outside of the pack to dry as you walk.

If you want insulation that keeps coffee hot through a long sit at a windy overlook, this is not the cup; pick a double-wall mug instead.

Honest limits

Stainless conducts heat. The bowl and rim are hot when the contents are hot, and the fixed handle warms if the cup sits near a flame, so hold it by the handle and let a boiling pour settle before you sip. Hot coffee also cools fast in the wide, shallow bowl, which is good at a trailhead and less good on a long, cold sit. It is the cup only: no cooler bag and no cutlery are included. Rinse it after use and it is ready to go again.
