Pocket Coffee Scale with Backlit LCD

Why it exists

A 15 g pour at camp is easy to guess and easy to miss. Grind and dose are the two numbers that actually change the cup, and a kitchen scale does not fit in a side pocket. This pocket scale puts a stainless platform, an LCD with blue backlight, and tare in a compact mini body that rides with the grinder. It runs on two AAA cells, not included, and it is the only electronic piece we pack with the kit.

How it works

Set the scale on a flat, still surface out of the wind and about 100 cm (39 in) from phones, laptops, and other electronics, or the reading will wander. Power on, pick your unit, and set the mug, dripper, AeroPress, or paper filter on the platform. Press tare to zero it, then add beans or grounds to your number. For pour-over, tare the mug with the dripper and filter in place and pour water to the target weight. The overload indicator warns when the load is too much for the sensor, and auto power off spares the batteries. Two trays ship with it, one large and one small, for beans or grounds.

Choose the Model by what you weigh. The 500 g / 0.01 g model reads to 500 g (17.6 oz) in 0.01 g steps, usable from 0.1 g, with a weighing error of ±0.05 g; it is the bean-dose scale. The 3 kg / 0.1 g model reads to 3 kg (6.6 lb) in 0.1 g steps, usable from 0.5 g, with a weighing error of ±0.5 g; pick it to weigh a whole brewer with water in it.

Built for the trail

• Body about 12.6 × 10.5 × 2 cm (5.0 × 4.1 × 0.8 in). Flat enough for a side pocket beside the dripper.
• 10 × 10 cm (3.9 × 3.9 in) stainless steel platform. Holds a camp mug or a dripper and wipes clean.
• One large tray and one small tray included. Weigh beans or grounds without taring a brewer.
• Tare and overload indicator. Net weight on a mug, AeroPress, or paper filter, and a warning before the sensor is pushed too far.
• LCD with blue backlight. Read grams in low light without a headlamp.
• Six units: g, ct, oz, gn, ozt, dwt.
• Auto power off on two 1.5 V AAA cells. Batteries not included; pull them for long storage.

Best for

Pour-over and AeroPress brewers at the trailhead, picnic table, van counter, or home counter who want dose and water weight without a kitchen scale. Pick the 500 g / 0.01 g model if you weigh beans and grounds and care about hundredths; pick the 3 kg / 0.1 g model if you weigh a full brewer and water together. If you need a scale that shrugs off rain or wind in the open, this is not that scale.

Honest limits

It is a precision instrument and behaves like one. Wind and nearby electronics make the reading wander, so keep it still and about 100 cm (39 in) from phones and laptops. It is not built to get wet: mind water, wipe it with a dry towel, store it dry. Batteries are not included. The 500 g model tops out at 500 g, so a heavy mug plus brew water can trip the overload indicator; weigh beans on the tray, or choose the 3 kg model. Accuracy figures are the maker's.
