304 Stainless Steel Hanging-Ear Coffee Filter

Why it exists

Paper filters run out, soak through in a wet pack, and leave you standing over a mug with hot water and nothing to hold the grounds. Drip bags are convenient until the box is empty three days from a store. This 304 stainless mesh cone hangs on the rim of your mug by two fold-out ears, so you can brew pour-over at camp or at the kitchen counter with no paper supply at all. When you are done, the ears fold in and the whole cone sits inside a cup.

How it works

Unfold the two ears and hook them over the rim of a mug or camp cup; with the ears open the cone is about 12.9 cm (5.1 in) wide, which spans most mugs. Add your grounds to the mesh, wet them with a little hot water to bloom, then pour in slow passes the same way you would with a paper dripper. The coffee drains straight through the 304 stainless mesh into the cup below. Lift it off, knock the spent grounds into your trash bag or fire-safe ash pile, rinse the mesh, and let it dry.

It is a single-cup pour-over tool. It replaces the dripper and the paper in one piece and works over any cup the ears can grip: an enamel mug, a titanium cup, or the kitchen mug at home. For packing, fold the ears in and drop the cone, about 7.4 cm (2.9 in) tall, into the same mug you brew in.

Honest limits

A metal mesh passes more fine particles and coffee oils than a paper filter, so expect a heavier-bodied cup with some sediment at the bottom. It brews one cup at a time. The ears need a rim to grip; very wide bowls or cups with a thick rolled lip may not seat it level, so check your mug against the roughly 12.9 cm span. The maker does not list a weight. Rinse it after every brew, because dried grounds clog mesh faster than they clog paper.
