Why it exists
A kettle or percolator over a campfire needs a steady hang at the right height, and you rarely want to haul three metal poles to get it. This kit is the part of a tripod that is hard to make in the field, a stainless triangle plate, a stainless hanging chain, and a hook, and leaves the easy part to the woods. You cut three sticks at camp, join them with the plate, and hang the pot. At home it is the same job over a backyard fire. The sticks stay where you camped; the metal packs into a small pouch.
How it works
Find three sturdy sticks of similar length and trim them. Fit them into the stainless triangle plate so they meet at the top, then spread the feet around the fire ring into a tripod. Hang the chain, about 80 cm (31 in), from the plate and hook the bail of your kettle or percolator so the pot sits where you want it over the flames. Feed the fire beneath it and let the pot do its work: a percolator for a full pot of camp coffee, or a kettle of water for pour-over, a press, or cowboy coffee.
When camp is done and the pot has cooled, unhook it, lift the chain off, pull the sticks from the plate, and leave them in the field. The plate, chain, and hook go back into the pouch and take a corner of a cook box. There is nothing electric and nothing to assemble beyond the sticks you find.
Built for the trail
-
Stainless triangle plate. Joins three sticks you cut at camp into a tripod, so you carry the joint and not the legs.
-
Stainless hanging chain, about 80 cm (31 in), with hook (maker's figure). Hangs a kettle or percolator over the fire.
-
Packs into a small pouch. Plate, chain, and hook ride in a cook box or pack pocket.
-
Steel throughout. Lives next to open flame and soot; wipe it and it is ready for the next fire.
-
Nothing electric, no high-concerned chemicals listed. A simple mechanical kit.
-
Sticks stay in the field. The heaviest part of the tripod never comes home with you.
-
Works over a backyard fire too. Same plate, same chain, same percolator.
Best for
Car campers, canoe and river trips, group camps with an established fire ring, and backyard fire pits, especially anyone who brews in a percolator or boils a kettle over flame. It suits trips where downed wood is plentiful and fires are allowed. If you camp above the treeline, under a fire ban, or where cutting sticks is not permitted, or if you want a self-standing all-metal tripod with poles in the box, this kit is the wrong tool; poles are not included.
Honest limits
You supply the legs, so the stability of the tripod depends on the sticks you cut and how evenly you set them. It is an open-fire accessory, not a stove accessory, and it is only useful where fires and stick cutting are allowed. The chain and hook will pick up soot from the fire; wipe them before they go back into the pouch with the rest of the kit. The maker lists the chain length but not a weight or plate dimensions, so we do not state them.
